Recruiting
Recruiting in the time of COVID-19
We know that this time of year is an important junction in the process of recruiting next year’s beginning instrumental students. Normally many of you would right now be visiting feeder schools or lower grades at your campus, demonstrating instruments, and hosting instrument try-out nights where future band members could experience the joy of playing for the first time. All of this is challenged by the COVID-19 emergency, and we know it must be causing you stress as you think about next year.
While the most important factor in recruiting next year’s beginners is undoubtedly the personal relationship you develop with them, the music faculty at CU Boulder hope we can offer a resource to aid you in reaching out to those potential instrumentalists. The studio faculty have created short videos for each of the woodwind and brass instruments, plus mallet percussion and snare. Each video features a demonstration of the instrument with some musical excerpts, as well as the instructor talking about what the instrument is and why a student might choose to play that instrument. Our hope is that you can use these videos to introduce prospective students to the wonderful world of wind and percussion instruments.

You are welcome to share this link with your prospective students and their families, and these resources will remain online through at least June 1st of this year. Feel free also to share this with any other music teachers in Colorado who may need it. Please know that we support Colorado music teachers during this unprecedented situation, and we hope this resource can be a benefit to you and your students. Best to you all!
More to come…
